Turning a word problem into a drawing
Drawing objects or groups makes relationships visible in primary maths. The picture need not be beautiful; each mark must have a clear meaning. Add the given information one piece at a time.
Try it yourself first.
Three shelves each hold five books. Four books are removed from the total. Draw the shelves, then mark the removed books.
View the solution or example answer
There are initially 3 × 5 = 15 books. Removing four leaves 11. The drawing explains why the total is found before subtracting.
Your next step.
Ask the student to write a calculation beside the drawing. If they describe different situations, correct the model before changing the numbers.
