Keeping a measurement constant when converting units

A different number of centimetres or metres can describe the same length. Smaller units require more units. Use this relationship to explain the conversion factor.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Cut 75 centimetres from a 2.4-metre rope. Write the remaining length in centimetres and metres.

View the solution or example answer

2.4 metres is 240 centimetres. 240 − 75 = 165 centimetres, or 1.65 metres. Use a common unit before subtracting.

Your next step.

Choose a common unit first and mark the final unit the question requests. Explain why a larger unit needs a smaller number to make sense of multiplying or dividing.
