Geometric forms representing mathematical thinking

Finding a product from a fact you already know

Use a known multiplication fact instead of memorising every product separately. Adding or removing a group provides an intuitive start to distributive thinking.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Use 5 × 7 = 35 to find 6 × 7. Continue the same approach for 7 × 7.

View the solution or example answer

Six groups of seven are one more than five groups: 35 + 7 = 42. Add another group to get 49. Each step adds seven.

Your next step.

Ask for a drawing that explains the shortcut. Understanding why a strategy works creates a stronger connection than merely reaching the result.
