Catching percentage errors with an estimate
Compare your percentage result with the starting amount. For example, 20% is one fifth of the whole. Check that your amount matches that relationship.
Try it yourself first.
Find 20% of 350. Check it by finding 10% first and by dividing by five.
View the solution or example answer
10% is 35, so 20% is 70. Also, 350 ÷ 5 = 70. A result of 700 would contradict the fact that 20% is smaller than the whole.
Your next step.
Include a checking method in every solution. Discuss the expected size as well as the steps. Recheck units and the decimal point if the result does not fit.
