Speech bubbles representing language and communication

Describing a word you cannot remember

If a word escapes you, describe its purpose, appearance or where it is used instead of abandoning the sentence. Maintaining communication may matter more than finding one word.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Imagine you cannot remember “umbrella”. Describe its use without saying the word.

View the solution or example answer

“It is something we use when it rains.” gives a listener a useful identifying feature. You do not need every detail or a complex sentence.

Your next step.

Describe five everyday objects in different ways, then learn their names. Check whether each description is specific enough. Add an example or contrast if needed.
