Explaining the rule in a number pattern
Explain the relationship between neighbouring numbers rather than only giving the next term. Start with constant increases or decreases and express the rule in a sentence.
Try it yourself first.
Find the difference in 4, 9, 14, 19. Write the next two numbers, then start a new sequence at a smaller number using the same rule.

Add five each time: 24 and 29 follow. The sequence 1, 6, 11, 16 uses the same increase. Starting value and rule are different features.
Your next step.
Ask the student to create a pattern for someone else to solve. In later study, discuss why a few terms may not determine one unique rule.
