Looking for evidence when making an inference
State which words support an unstated idea. Avoid treating assumptions from your own experience as certain information in the text.
Try it yourself first.
“Mira put on her coat and took an umbrella before leaving.” What might you infer about the weather, and what cannot you know for certain?
View the solution or example answer
Mira appears to be preparing for rain, but the sentence does not say it is definitely raining. The coat and umbrella show preparation, not a direct weather report.
Your next step.
Separate notes into “in the text” and “my inference”. Do not present an unsupported inference as fact. Write what extra sentence would confirm it.
