Steps representing progress in exam preparation

Finding the core structure of a sentence first

When arranging words, identify who does what first. Add time, place and reason afterwards. Treat conjunctions and auxiliary verbs as parts of the structure rather than random words.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Arrange “the student / every morning / reads / a short article” into a natural sentence. Mark the subject and verb.

View the solution or example answer

“The student reads a short article every morning.” is one arrangement. “The student” is the subject and “reads” the verb. The time expression can come at the end.

Your next step.

In longer sentences, find the core before adding details. This is not an official TOEFL question; it can accompany preparation for current tasks.
