Steps representing progress in exam preparation

Understanding the relationship a linking word creates

More linking words do not automatically make ideas coherent. First identify addition, cause or contrast, then choose an appropriate expression.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Join “The task was difficult. I completed it.” with a contrast. Consider how a causal conjunction would change the meaning.

View the solution or example answer

“The task was difficult, but I completed it.” shows contrast. “Because” would create a cause-and-effect relationship and would not express the same intended meaning here.

Your next step.

Write the relationship beside each connector in your draft. This is not an official IELTS task; it practises making relationships clear in writing.
