Speech bubbles representing language and communication

Keeping a conversation going with follow-up questions

Ask about a detail the other person actually mentioned instead of only giving your own answer or following a prepared topic list.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Someone says “I started learning the guitar last month.” Write two follow-up questions without asking again when they started.

View the solution or example answer

“What made you choose the guitar?” and “How often do you practise?” extend the conversation. “When did you start?” repeats information already given.

Your next step.

Note one word your partner uses and connect a question to it. The question need not be long or complicated.
