Word order in English questions

Do not rely only on a change of tone to make a question. Identify the verb and tense, then look at that structure’s question pattern. Start with small groups of similar forms.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Turn “You work at home.” into a yes–no question, then ask where the person works. Think about the information each answer needs.

View the solution or example answer

“Do you work at home?” and “Where do you work?” are examples. This present simple verb uses “do” in questions. Questions with “be” need to be considered separately.

Your next step.

Make several questions with one structure before mixing all tenses. Add both short answers and full-sentence answers.
