Speech bubbles representing language and communication

Finding the main idea without getting stuck on every word

Set a listening purpose: what is the conversation about, and what does someone want? Focus on these questions first instead of writing every word. Examine details afterwards.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Consider “I can’t meet on Monday. Could we talk on Tuesday instead?” Explain the person’s main request in your own words.

View the solution or example answer

The person cannot meet on Monday and suggests Tuesday. The main purpose is to change a plan. “Instead” signals the change between options.

Your next step.

With a short recording at your level, note the purpose first, then dates or times. Try not to lose the whole message over a single unfamiliar word.
