Speech bubbles representing language and communication

Choosing the main idea in a short text

A paragraph’s main idea may differ from its most interesting detail. Ask what connects its sentences. Suggest a title and check whether it covers the whole text.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

For “Lena reads on the bus, listens to short podcasts and writes a few sentences every evening.” compare “Lena’s daily learning habits” with “Lena’s favourite bus”.

The first title covers all the activities. The second highlights one detail and assumes a preference that is not stated. Notice this difference in scope.

Your next step.

Summarise each paragraph of a longer text in one sentence. Avoiding information that is not in the text supports writing as well as reading.
