Steps representing progress in exam preparation

Stating an email’s purpose in the first sentence

Decide who you are writing to, why and what response you want. Express your request clearly without an unnecessarily long introduction.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Draft an email asking about a study group’s meeting time. Include a greeting, purpose, one clear question and a closing.

View the solution or example answer

“Hello, I’m writing to ask about our next meeting. Could you confirm the time? Thank you.” is a short draft. In a more detailed task, cover every point in the instructions.

Your next step.

Check that the recipient knows what you want them to do. This is not an official TOEFL question; consult ETS for the current task format.
