Distinguishing a digit from its place value

A digit and the value of its position are different things. Start by separating a number into hundreds, tens and ones. Ask the student to explain why swapping the cards changes the number.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Partition 352. Then swap the digits 3 and 5 and write the new number. Which digit gains value and which loses value?

View the solution or example answer

352 = 300 + 50 + 2; the new number is 532. The value of 5 increases from 50 to 500, while the value of 3 falls from 300 to 30. The digits stay the same but their positions change.

Your next step.

Partition a new number before reading it from memory. If confusion continues, practise with tens and ones before moving to larger numbers. You can share your examples in an online lesson.
