Geometric forms representing mathematical thinking

Understanding multiplication through equal groups

Distinguish the number of groups from the number of objects in each group. Arrange objects in equal groups, then discuss repeated addition and multiplication as ways of representing them.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Draw four boxes with three pencils in each. Show two ways to find the total without counting every pencil individually.

View the solution or example answer

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 and 4 × 3 = 12 represent the same total. Three boxes of four pencils also make 12, but the number of boxes and pencils per box differ.

Your next step.

Before choosing an operation, ask “How many groups?” and “How many in each group?” Do not apply the same model directly when the groups are unequal.
