Equal sharing and remainders in division

Division can mean sharing equally or forming groups of a particular size. To explain a remainder, consider whether the objects in the question can be divided, as well as the numerical result.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Share 17 beads equally between four boxes. How many are in each box and how many remain? Would giving one box an extra bead keep the sharing equal?

View the solution or example answer

Each box gets four beads and one remains: 17 = 4 × 4 + 1. Giving the remainder to just one box would break the equal sharing. Here, the remainder is the bead left unshared.

Your next step.

Explain the same numbers by making groups of four. Understanding the difference between these interpretations helps connect the operation with everyday situations.
