Keeping units consistent when measuring length
The unit used for measuring must stay the same length. Measuring a desk with pencils of different lengths can produce different numbers. Explore this with non-standard units before moving to centimetres.
Try it yourself first.
One strip is 70 centimetres long and another is 45 centimetres. Find their combined length in centimetres and in metres and centimetres.
View the solution or example answer
70 + 45 = 115 centimetres. As 100 centimetres make one metre, the total is 1 metre 15 centimetres. Writing the unit keeps the meaning of 115 clear.
Your next step.
Estimate the length before calculating. Check that the ruler starts at zero and that gaps between measurements are not included.
