Geometric forms representing mathematical thinking

Separating given information from what a problem asks

In a long question, identify the role of each piece of information before using every number. List what is given separately from what you need to find. Some information may be unnecessary.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

A notebook costs 24 TL and a pen costs 9 TL. Someone buys two notebooks and three pens, paying with 100 TL. Find the total cost, then the change.

View the solution or example answer

Two notebooks cost 48 TL and three pens cost 27 TL. The total is 75 TL, so the change is 25 TL. The 100 TL is used to find the difference between payment and cost, not added to the prices.

Your next step.

Write what you are calculating beside each line. Even a correct calculation may not yet answer the quantity the question asks for.
