Preserving the relationship when scaling a ratio

Both quantities in a ratio must change by the same factor. Label what is being compared and keep the quantities in order.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

A mixture uses two measures of juice and three of water. How much water is needed with six measures of juice to keep the same taste?

View the solution or example answer

Juice triples, so water must triple too: 3 × 3 = 9 measures. The ratio changes from 2:3 to 6:9. Increasing just one ingredient would not preserve it.

Your next step.

Check whether the question asks for a ratio or a total amount. Use a table to keep corresponding quantities together.
