Geometric forms representing mathematical thinking

Distinguishing a geometry drawing from given facts

Do not assume measurements just because a shape looks regular. Mark the lengths and angles that are given. Unless a drawing is stated to be to scale, visual estimates cannot justify a solution.

A SHORT EXERCISE

Try it yourself first.

Two interior angles of a triangle are 45° and 65°. Find the third. Would drawing the shape in another orientation change the result?

View the solution or example answer

A triangle’s interior angles total 180°, so the third is 180 − 45 − 65 = 70°. Rotating the shape does not change its angles; the given relationships determine the answer.

Your next step.

State the property used in your solution. Do not assume unmarked parallel lines, equal lengths or right angles. An angle that looks square is not necessarily 90°.
