Following rows and columns when reading a table
Start with the title and unit. Explain which row and column meet at each cell. Before adding two values, check that they represent the same kind of information.
Try it yourself first.
A reading chart shows 12 pages on Monday, 18 on Tuesday and 15 on Wednesday. Find the three-day total and the difference between Tuesday and Monday.
View the solution or example answer
The total is 12 + 18 + 15 = 45 pages. Tuesday has six more pages than Monday. A total and a difference use the same table but ask about different relationships.
Your next step.
Ask the student to write a new question the table can answer. Using the headings correctly gives a fuller check of understanding than simply finding numbers.
