Thinking of percentages as parts of a hundred
Before treating a percentage as a memorised multiplier, show what “per hundred” means. A hundred-square model can connect the ratio with fractions and decimals.
Try it yourself first.
A 200 TL item has a 15% discount. Find 10% and 5%, then write the discount amount and the new price separately.
View the solution or example answer
10% is 20 TL and 5% is 10 TL. The discount is 30 TL and the new price is 170 TL. These are different quantities: check which the question asks for.
Your next step.
Apply the same percentage to different starting amounts. Explain why the amount changes even though the percentage stays the same.
